Subjunctive in Conditional Clauses

Konjunktiv II is used in conditional (hypothetical) sentences to express unreal conditions and their consequences. German distinguishes between present unreal conditions (Konjunktiv II Präsens) and past unreal conditions (Konjunktiv II Plusquamperfekt), the latter expressing regret or missed opportunities.
- • Present unreal: 'Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen.' (If I were rich, I would travel.)
- • Past unreal: 'Wenn ich es gewusst hätte, hätte ich anders gehandelt.' (If I had known, I would have acted differently.)
- • Common strong verb forms: wäre, hätte, käme, ginge, wüsste, könnte, müsste, dürfte
- • For most other verbs, use 'würde + infinitive': 'Wenn er käme...' or 'Wenn er kommen würde...'
Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich ein Buch schreiben.
If I had more time, I would write a book.
Hätte ich das gewusst, wäre ich nicht gekommen.
Had I known that, I would not have come.
Wenn es nicht so teuer wäre, würden wir öfter ins Theater gehen.
If it weren't so expensive, we would go to the theater more often.
Tip: In past unreal conditionals, 'wenn' can be omitted and the verb moves to the first position: 'Hätte ich das gewusst, ...' This inversion style is common in formal writing and sounds more elegant.
